Fancy Dance , the queer drama starring Lily Gladstone and Isabel Deroy-Olson, is the feature directorial debut of Erica Tremblay, a queer and Native American woman. In 2023, Fancy Dance premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and more than a year later, Gladstone announced on social media that the film's release will be on June 21 .

What is 'Fancy Dance' about?
Since his sister's disappearance, Jax (Lily Gladstone) has taken care of his niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) , barely surviving on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. However, Jax faces the risk of losing custody of Roki and so the two join together on a cross-country trip to find her .
Along the way, the journey ends up being an investigation into the complexities and contradictions of indigenous women who move in a colonized world and respond to a failed justice system.

A queer film with a different point of view
The director of Fancy Dance , Erica Tremblay, had already had the opportunity to work with Lily Gladstone and, when she began the process of making this film, she knew that Gladstone (a queer and Native American woman) had to be part of the project .
In an interview with Outfest , Erica Tremblay talks about Lily Gladstone's character, Jax. From the beginning, they wanted Jax's queerness not to be the source of any specific struggle or trauma (as it usually is in movies with queer characters).
"We wanted the fact that she was queer to be just a part of her (...) like being a loving aunt. It just exists instead of being something we're really scrutinizing and I think in some ways it was liberating to have a character queer whose movie plot has nothing specifically to do with that."
Erica Tremblay's debut in 'Fancy Dance' is a reflection of her life
Erica Tremblay is a queer woman and Native American from Seneca-Cayuga. Before Fancy Dance she was known for being a documentary film director on films such as In the Turn, Heartland: A Portrait of Survival and Tiny Red Universe .
Although Fancy Dance is not an autobiographical film, Erica Tremblay says in the interview with Outfest that it was inevitable when writing the script that she and Miciana Alise did not include things from their own experiences.
"This idea of this family, Jax and Roki, having to navigate ... their white family as Native women is definitely something I was able to draw from my personal experience," she said.
Other themes in the film, such as sex work, also crossed the life of Tremblay who worked for many years in strip clubs as a sex worker. For this reason, I wanted to have a character that reflected how this part of your life does not take away strength and importance from the other aspects of daily life , such as being a mother.
There were issues such as disappearance that, although she had not experienced them firsthand, the director knew were important to make visible.
