After about 10 years, Karthik Subbaraj is back in Jigarthanda world. He has used more imagination in this than the previous part.
Like Jigarthanda, Jigarthanda Double X revolves around two main characters. One is a director and the other is a nasty gangster. They have shown it as happening in the 1970s. First the story starts in Madurai and then moves towards the forest area. Karthik Subbaraj introduces the dreaded gangster Caesar (Raghava Lawrence) in Madurai. That Caesar is an ardent fan of famous Hollywood actor Clint Eastwood. So he screens only Easwood's films in his theatre. Caesar wants to become a hero and act in Eastwood style films. Ray Dasan (SJ Surya), who claims to be Satyajit Ray's assistant, gets an opportunity to direct Caesar's first film.
But what Caesar doesn't know is that Ray Dasan's aim is not only to direct the film. As the story progresses, the duo discovers all sorts of unexpected things for Ray Dassan to film Caesar's life. Karthik Subbaraj has tried to use the favre of cinema again. But the screenplay is not strong and after the interval the interest gets lost. The film talks interestingly about the life of tribal people, political power struggles, the world of gangsters. But the film struggles to draw the fans completely into that world. The views of Surya coming are beautiful. The intermission scene is amazing. Karthik Subbaraj impressed us with his style in that scene. The length of the film could have been reduced. Tests the patience of theatergoers. The two songs in the second half did not give a hand. Although the screenplay is not strong, the visual treatment and artistic passion of Karthik Subpuraj saves the film.
The second half was not very impressive. But the climax scene seems to set it all right. Raghava Lawrence's performance as a gangster-turned-hero is brilliant. S. J. Suriya has given a great performance as usual. B.G.M. Not a clean hand. Tom Sacco and Nimisha Sajayan have played their roles with real feel. Lyta tries to match Jigarthanda with Jigarthanda DoubleX.
